Happy Friday! [Jul. 21st, 2006|02:53 pm]
[mood | happy]

The weekend is here! Woohoo! Time to put on the party hats.

Just wanted to give an update that my mom is doing great. My niece is doing wonderful too after her surgery.

Things are going good here as well, and I've had some conversations with a couple of editors. I have my fingers crossed that something will work out. =)

A Summer of Surgeries [Jul. 12th, 2006|04:53 pm]
My mom's surgery to remove the skin cancer on her face went well. She also had her toenail removed, so at least her pain is balanced from top to bottom. She'll tell me that's not funny with a smile. She's having her second skin cancer surgery tomorrow to remove the spot on her back. I have my fingers crossed that all goes well with that.

Upcoming surgeries:
Mom: 2nd skin cancer removal, hammer-toe-ectomy
Niece: Tonsillectomy
Dad: Polyps removed from nose
Brother: Heart evaluation (not sure of exact procedure?)

I dodged this list as I was going to have my other ear operated on this summer. However, as I wrote in an earlier post, the doctor said there wasn't enough improvement in my other ear that was operated on in February. Maybe it isn't such a good thing that I'm not on this list. I'm starting to feel left out. Not funny, but I'm smiling.

Just a reminder to wear sunscreen... [Jun. 28th, 2006|12:18 pm]
[mood | contemplative]

I got a call from my mom this morning that her skin tests revealed she has basal cell skin cancer. I got a reminder from her to protect my skin, and I thought I'd pass along this information for awareness:

Remembering Ann Sullivan [Jun. 15th, 2006|10:15 am]
[mood | sad]

I checked my email this morning and received this news:

Dear Friends,
I just heard the terribly sad news from Chip (C. W.) Sullivan that his wife Ann has died.

For those that knew her and would like the address, please email me.

Ann taught me storytelling at Hollins University and was so enthusiastic, caring, and genuine. This news comes as a shock and I'm devastated for Chip Sullivan, as well as the Hollins community. She will be so missed.

Drama [Jun. 6th, 2006|05:27 pm]
[mood | exhausted]

It's been some time since my last entry. I had someone recently ask me, "Why write for teens?"
"That's what I'm interested in," I said to avoid having to explain my traumatic teen years and empathy for today's teenagers.
Honestly, I feel like I'm back in junior high right now regarding the drama between my friends. I want to have a dinner party soon and I can't invite X because Y might be there. This reminds me of algebra, which I was never too fond of.
If I get asked that question again, I might shrug my shoulders and say, "Some things never change."

Babies, Decibels, and Chaos [May. 20th, 2006|01:23 am]
Everything has been so chaotic as of late. My workload is steep and I need to power-clean my house. I have, however, managed to see Baby Abbey (found out there is an E in her name) three times this week. I got a call tonight from my sis-in-law, Mike's sister, that she and her hubby are expecting their first baby in December. That will be the 6th baby born to family and friends this year.

(Mike says I look like I'm pinching Abbey, but trust me, I'm not!)

On a non-procreation note, I had my post-op hearing test (from a stapedectomy surgery in February) today and found out I had some improvement. It is now on equal level with my other ear as far as decibel levels go. My hearing is now slightly below average and not way below average. "What?" you say.

[mood | excited]

My friend, Chesley, gave birth to her daughter today at 10:35 a.m. Soon after, I got to hold and kiss Abby Lee. I'm still so overwhelmed by how beautiful she is and how amazing everything went.

Dancing, Gators, and a Year Older [May. 9th, 2006|10:33 pm]
[mood | content]

Here is a picture from Dallas Night Club on Friday. Rrrrr! Our trip to Louisiana was fantastic and we had a chance to check out the pirate festival. Mmmm...funnel cake...We hit the hot tub at our hotel and walked the beach, as well as drove down gator alley. What a sight to see so many gators by the side of the road! Today, I got caught up on my student load, but need to go on an all night write-a-thon. ;)

Cinco de Mayo [May. 5th, 2006|12:37 pm]
[mood | ecstatic]

Feliz Cinco de Mayo! Today will certainly be a day of celebrations. My friends are throwing me a psuedo-birthday party at Dallas Night Club (since my real b-day is on a Monday). I'm already starting to feel anxious about what to wear. I'm thinking the baby blue shirt with the white earings and sparkly sandals. Too junior high? I could change my mind to black at any moment. I'm thinking of straightening my hair at the salon and also getting a manicure. Confession: I've never had one. The thing is though, I need to get some writing done and have to finish my student assignments. Mike and I are leaving on Saturday to travel to the Texas coast and drive into Louisiana. We're heading to Contraband Days Festival on Sunday. Time to celebrate! (And get some other things done.)

Laptop fixed! [May. 4th, 2006|07:37 pm]
[mood | curious]

Thanks be to the folks at Dell who fixed my computer! Minus the now cracked keyboard, all is well. I started fiending for my own laptop and personal settings, etc. I would need a hand-enhancement if I had to use Mike's on a regular basis. Not sure what a hand-enhancement is exactly, but I had to stretch my fingers unnaturally far to reach certain keys. I'm currently revising a manuscript to submit to an agent and worrying that it won't be strong enough. Fingers stretched and crossed!

Computer down [May. 3rd, 2006|12:11 am]
[mood | anxious]

My computer must've been motivated by the sound of jet engines taking off at the airport on Sunday because it started making some whirling/grinding noises. The fan is out and perhaps something else inside, so I'm using my husband's when I can. I should get mine fixed soon. My last laptop was much more dramatic and decided to spark and smoke all the way to the bitter end. Thank goodness for frequent backups! I'll be back in full force hopefully by the end of the week.
